The Birmingham Tower Ballroom in
Edgbaston, started life as a roller skating rink in the 1870s and has
been a night spot for dancing since the 1920s. Next to the Edgbaston
reservoir, The Tower Ballroom has been a favourite dancing venue for
many generations.
To the sounds of 'Dave Berry & the
Cruisers', 'Marmalade', 'The Fortunes' and 'The Searchers', The Tower
closed its doors in December 2005 as it was to be bulldozed to make way
for luxury homes. However, like a phoenix rising from the ashes it
returned after local opposition gave it a new lease of life.
With a line up including 'The Mersey
Beats' and 'The Cufflinks', the revamped Tower Ballroom returned on
April 3rd 2008 with the aid of local businessman, Liam O'Connor.
Liam
O'Connor's tenure was short lived as Bal Sangha, took over The Tower
Ballroom in 2009 with plans to maximise revenues from wedding
celebrations, especially the lucrative Asian wedding market with
functions for up to 1,500 people. Bal Sangha also plans to carry on the
traditional tea dances and Saturday night over-25s disco. |
