Howard from Devon emailed to say
that he went to a dance at the Tower Ballroom when the Sid Lawrence Band
was playing. The Sid Lawrence Band was a specialist in the Glen Miller
sound.
Howard also mentioned that a aunt and uncle of his met at the Tower
Ballroom, and had a long and happy marriage, their eldest son is 73 so
it must have been in the 1930s.
Howard’s mother also went to the Tower and said that if you did not have
a partner to dance with, the Tower used to employ professional dancers.
You paid your money ,so was entitled a dance. They were called Hoovers
(American word). There were also other dance halls, 'The Casino' in
Corporation Street, 'Tony’s Ballroom' in Hurst Street, 'Springfield
Ballroom' in Springhill and also a large one in Walford Road plus many
pubs that had assembly rooms so people had a good choice but the tops
was 'The Tower Ballroom'.
David from Canada emailed to
say that "My wife and I met at Tony's in 1957. This year we shared our
50th anniversary celebrations with two other couples in Winnipeg, who
also enjoyed dancing in Birmingham. They are lifelong friends and used
to enjoy the Adelphi, West Brom. The other great ballroom was of course
the West End, very classy! Regards David Caddick.
